Super Spellers: Vos will represent L-S at Iowa final of Scripps National Spelling Bee

Top spellers in fifth through eighth grade not only tested their spelling of a wide variety of words, but also broadened their knowledge of vocabulary during the annual spelling bee held Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Interested super spellers from each grade level participated. If multiple students from each grade were interested in competing, a class spelling bee was held to determine the top two. Competitors included eighth-graders Megan Van Zante and Meleisha Vos, seventh-graders Joshua Morningstar and Parker Van Wyk, sixth-graders Reese Dunsbergen and Kendra Fikse, and fifth-graders Riley Van Maanen and Majesta Vos.

After weeks of studying, the group of eight students competed in front of their peers in the middle school gym. Mr. Jeff Corbett, middle school math teacher, served as the announcer. Mrs. Colleen Taylor, TAG teacher, organized the event. In addition to spelling words, this year’s bee included two rounds of vocabulary. The state-level bee will be spelling only, however at the national bee level, vocabulary will again be highlighted.

Majesta Vos was crowned champion of the 2017 spelling bee, followed by Van Zante in second place and Majesta’s sister, Meleisha, earned third-place honors.

Majesta will represent L-S at the Iowa final of the Scripps National Spelling Bee sponsored by Iowa State University Department of Journalism on Saturday, Mar. 25, held at Hamilton Hall on the ISU campus.

An elementary spelling bee will be held Thursday, Mar. 30, with the following classroom winners participating: First-graders Chase Deal and Rhylee Rogers, second- graders Ronan Sandeno and Peyton Sharp, third-graders Will Conover and Saylor Van Wyk, and fourth- graders Carter Brand and Corrina Rozendaal.
