The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team traveled to Montezuma looking for revenge on the Braves last Friday, Jan. 27. Montezuma had handed the Hawks their only loss back in December. This time around, L-S went home celebrating after pulling off a 63-51 victory.

The Hawks ended the first quarter with just a three-point lead, but by halftime L-S had added another six points to their lead, taking a 39-30 advantage into halftime. The Hawks had a rough time generating offense in the third quarter, scoring only seven points and allowing Montezuma to close in on their 46-41 lead. The Hawks were able to hold them off and make some free throws down the stretch to win 63-51.

“Both teams came out and shot the ball really well,” said L-S Coach Nick Harthoorn. “We were able to create a little lead in the second quarter. Monte made a run, but the guys hung tough. It was a good road win for the Hawks.”

The Hawks’ good night on offense could be accounted for with four double-digit scorers. Juniors Jesse Van Wyk and Tanner Foster each ended the night with 15 points.

“We had a good night offensively,” Foster said. “We started off shooting well, and our defense stepped up and slowed them down offensively. We held them to 12 points or under in every quarter besides the first. That doesn’t happen very often to Monte with the good shooters they have.”

Junior Brevin Hansen and sophomore Rylan James each finished with 13 points. Senior Tyler Van Zante had three. Senior John Trettin and junior Corey McCoy each had two.

Fouls and free throws were a big part of the game. The Hawks had just 11 fouls, while Montezuma had 24. The Hawks also shot better than the Braves from the free-throw line, going 22 for 35 while Monte only went four for 15.

The win – the Hawks’ 11th in a row – improved the

L-S record to 16-1 while Montezuma dropped to 13-4.

The Hawks were scheduled to host Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Last time the teams met, L-S won handily, 68-38. The L-S boys will also host Iowa Valley this Thursday.
