DUNSBERGEN’S STATE DREAMS COME TRUE: Lynnville-Sully senior will wrap up successful high school wrestling career at state

Lynnville-Sully sent four wrestlers to the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A District 4 Meet in Pleasantville on Saturday, Feb. 10, with hopes of punching four tickets to the elite state tournament. CJ Snethen (120 lb.), Josh Dunsbergen (138 lb.), Cayden Johnson (152 lb.), and Sage Zylstra (170 lb.) all represented L-S well and wrestled among the top grapplers in Class 1A. At the end of the day, senior Josh Dunsbergen finished with the highest placement among L-S wrestlers, placing second, and will represent the Hawks at the state tournament Feb. 15-17.

Dunsbergen’s journey to the state tournament on Saturday was one of grit and determination. An early loss against eventual champion Drake Harbison of Pekin meant he had to win the remaining matches to make it to state. Dunsbergen buckled down and went to work, beating Nick Ives of Sigourney-Keota with a 12-8 decision, and beating SICL rival Tyler Strasser of North Mahaska with a 10-3 decision to secure second place and punch his ticket to the state wrestling tournament.

Dunsbergen celebrates the win and state advancement

This will be Dunsbergen’s second trip to state. He first qualified as a freshman and will end his high school wrestling career at the highest level. Dunsbergen, who sits at 35-6 on the year, will face 45-2 Kolton Roth of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Thursday, Feb. 15.

The other three L-S wrestlers competing at the district meet – Snethen, Johnson, and Zylstra – finished the season with fourth-place finishes at the district meet in their respective weight brackets. The meet ended the high school wrestling careers of seniors Johnson and Zylstra, who each reached 100 wins earlier this season.

Lynnville-Sully’s Josh Dunsbergen, on the right, ties up with Sigourney-Keota’s Nick Ives in the 138-pound weight bracket at the Class 1A District 4 Meet on Saturday, Feb. 10. The senior went 2-1 on Saturday, finishing in second place to earn his second trip to the state wrestling meet.
