With basketball season coming to a close, track season is already underway. There are currently 18 kids out for boys track at Lynnville-Sully, and seven of those competed at the state meet last year. This year’s athletes who aren’t in basketball have been practicing for over three weeks now.

“I am just excited that we get to compete again as a team and defend our conference and district titles and pursue for the gold at state,” said

L-S Head Boys Track Coach Mike Parkinson. “We currently have 18 kids out for track, but we are always looking for more athletes to join.”  Some events that should do well this year are the 4x400, 400-meter dash, 400-meter low hurdles, 800-meter medley relay, 110-meter high hurdles, high jump, and shot put.

Junior Ty Breeden and sophomore Ethan Wyma work out in the weight room during track practice last week.

Last year’s 4x400 team, which included Tyson Vander Linden, Corey McCoy, Carson Dunsbergen, and Gage Vander Leest, placed seventh at state, and all four of those participants are returning. The 800-meter medley relay of Vander Linden, Sage Zylstra, Nate Stock, and McCoy placed third at state, and all participants are returning. McCoy and Vander Linden also made it to state in the 400 open, and Vander Linden also has the experience of placing second last year at state in the 400-meter low hurdles. He plans to continue in that event.

“I am really looking forward to this year’s track season,” Vander Linden said. “With all of the people returning that went to state last year, we should bring a lot of people back to state and have a chance to get some state champions.” Dunsbergen, who was part of the 4x400 team, also made it to state in high jump. Vander Leest will also return in the 110-meter high hurdles. Junior Rylan James made it to state in the shot put and hopes to repeat.

The first track meet is the SICL indoor meet on Monday, Mar. 19, at Grinnell College, and the first outdoor meet is Mar. 27 at BCLUW.
