Girls golf season ends with best finish in five years

The Lynnville-Sully girls golf team had a chance to make it to state while competing at the Region 3 Final on Monday, May 22. Set at Keota’s Lagos Acres Golf Course, the meet featured the talents of golfers from New London, Iowa Valley, Winfield-Mt. Union, Sigourney, Colfax-Mingo, Martensdale-St. Marys, Montezuma, and L-S. The Hawks finished in sixth place out of the six full teams with a score of 463. New London won the meet with a 361 and will advance to team state along with Iowa Valley (383), a fellow SICL Conference team.

Conditions were fairly nice compared to the week before with temps hovering around 70 and winds around 10-20 mph.

“I think that we had a pretty good day as a whole,” said L-S Coach Justin Hagedorn.

Senior Kaylee Van Maanen played her best golf of the year, turning in a score of 99 with a back nine 45. She placed 13th overall out of 37 golfers. The top five individual golfers qualified for state.

The No. 2 L-S golfer was sophomore Tessa Van Maanen, who carded a 119. Senior Kristine Jaennette finished with a 122, and sophomore Kayla Van Dyke was a stroke behind at 123 to complete the team score. Senior Mikayla Smith also golfed and shot a 129.

This was the final meet of the year for the L-S girls golf team and the final event for Hagedorn as the L-S golf coach, who has resigned from the school district. The coach feels the way the 2017 season ended should provide good momentum to take into the off-season for next year.

“The season as a whole was very successful,” he said. “We advanced past the first round of district golf for the first time in five years. We got better as the year progressed, and we had a second-team all-conference golfer in Tessa Van Maanen.”

The coach concluded by thanking Kaylee V., Jaennette, and Smith for the time they put in for the program.
