Hawk wrestlers fall to C-M and S-K, beat host HLV

The Hawk wrestlers returned to the mat after Christmas break with a quadrangular dual at Victor against HLV, Colfax-Mingo, and Sigourney-Keota on Thursday, Jan. 4. After tying with HLV in the first round, the Hawks were awarded the dual win since they had more takedowns. L-S then fell short to both C-M and S-K. With only six wrestlers in the lineup, the Hawks struggled to get points on the boards.

“Due to some injuries and sickness, we had some open spots in the lineup that we normally don’t have,” said L-S Coach Jason Walston. “It was good to get back on the mat, but we have a lot more to work on.”

At 160 pounds for the Hawks was freshman Lane Mathis, who went 3-0. Mathis earned a forfeit against both HLV and C-M. Mathis then went on to pin Jesse Fritz of S-K in 1:07.

Senior Sage Zylstra controls Nate Schuster of Sigourney-Keota in a match at HLV last week. Zylstra pinned Schuster and finished the night at 3-0.

Senior Sage Zylstra also went 3-0 on the night at 170 pounds. Zylstra earned a forfeit against HLV, then went on to pin Xavier Anderson of C-M in 3:07. Against S-K, Zylstra pinned Nate Schuster in 3:53.

Senior Carson Dunsbergen went 2-1 on the night. Dunsbergen fell in the first dual to Caden Fontinel of HLV in 0:52. Dunsbergen went on to pin both of his opponents from C-M and S-K.

“It felt good to be back at it after break, but the team’s conditioning could use some work. I’m excited to get into the post-season,” said Dunsbergen.

Freshman CJ Snethen at 120 pounds also went 2-1. Snethen received a forfeit against HLV, fell to Cauy Fitch of C-M in 1:35, and pinned Gidien Goff of S-K in 0:39.

Senior Carson Dunsbergen pins his opponent from Sigourney-Keota at the quad in Victor last Thursday, Jan. 4. Dunsbergen went 2-1 that night.
