Hawk wrestlers place four at tough PCM meet, go 1-2 at C-M

The Hawk wrestling team had a good day at the PCM meet on Saturday, Jan. 7. L-S had several wrestlers place in the top eight. The Hawks got 11th out of 16 teams, with most of the schools being 2A or 3A in size. The Hawks’ top finisher of the day was junior Cayden Johnson, who finished second in the 152-pound weight bracket.

The Hawks’ lightest wrestler of the day was freshman Jacob De Hoedt, who lost his first match to Brady Brown of Westwood Sloan. Brown pinned De Hoedt in 3:25. De Hoedt’s next match of the day was against Gabe Gordon of Knoxville, who pinned De Hoedt in 1:46.

The next wrestler was junior Josh Dunsbergen, who wrestled at 126 on Saturday but is looking to bump up a weight class and wrestle 132 the rest of the year. In J. Dunsbergen’s first match of the day, he pinned Alex Bartels of Pleasantville in 3:13. In his quarterfinal match he was tec-falled by Gabe Ruepke of Chariton. In his third match of the day, J. Dunsbergen pinned Kody Gray of Westwood Sloan in 1:54. J. Dunsbergen then wrestled in the third-place match, losing to Shadrach Zarwie of Des Moines North, 12-7.

At 132 pounds was sophomore Ty Breeden. Breeden recorded a 1-3 day. In his first match, he wrestled Nathan Flystra of Westwood Sloan, pinning him in 3:16. He lost his next match to Klayton Keller of Saydel by pin. In his third match, he lost to Tyler Squires of Carlisle in 44 seconds. In his final match, Breeden lost to Cole Bisbee of Pella by getting pinned.

Senior Caden Dunsbergen wrestled at 138 pounds. He lost to his first opponent, Chase Shirk of PCM, by getting pinned in 3:00. He then pinned Grant Mutch of Carlisle in 1:00. He also beat Isaiah Whittrock 5-3 and pinned Jackson Dopheide of Saydel in 4:00 to place seventh.

Due to a shoulder injury, junior Carson Dunsbergen was not able to wrestle at the PCM meet. The Hawks were open at 145 pounds.

The next wrestler for the Hawks was junior Cayden Johnson at 152 pounds. Johnson wrestled his way into the finals match by pinning Tanner Bainbridge in 1:28 and beating Bryce Murray of Carlise, 15-5, in the semifinal match. In the final match for first and second place, Johnson fell to Drew Anderson of Westwood Sloan by getting pinned in 1:15.

At 160 pounds was junior Sage Zylstra, who finished in seventh. In his first match, he pinned Orrey Read of Carlisle in 1:30. Then he fell to Pleasantville’s Griffen McBride, 8-2. Zylstra also fell to Knoxville’s Michael Ullstead by pin. Zylstra won out from there by pinning Kaden Baker of Pekin in 5:07 and Hunter Rea from Westwood in 1:05.

Senior Colten Arment wrestled at 182 pounds, earning sixth. In his first match, Arment wrested Lucas Mitchell of Moravia and pinned him in 41 seconds. He then lost by pin to Trevor Sprague. Arment dropped his next match to Aiden Carr of Gilbert by getting pinned in 1:13. In his final match of the day, Arment lost to Jack Spencer of Chariton by getting pinned.

“This is probably the toughest meet we have all season, but I feel very good about how we performed altogether. We had a couple people step up and finish strong,” said Arment.

At 220 pounds, junior Aaron Van De Krol went 0-2 on the day. He was pinned in 1:13 by Colfax-Mingo’s Colten Lourens in his first match. In his second match, he lost to Jordan Jackson of Chariton by getting pinned in 5:34.

At the heavyweight bracket for the Hawks was sophomore Caleb Barnett. In his first match, he was pinned by Will Anthony of Pleasantville in 46 seconds. He then fell to Dylan Barnes of Carlisle by getting pinned in 2:55.


Two days prior to the PCM meet, the Hawks competed in a quadrangular at Colfax-Mingo with the Tigerhawks, HLV, and Sigourney. L-S went 1-2, beating HLV 36-30 but falling to the host 60-21 and dropping the dual with Sigourney 66-11.

In the 60-21 loss to C-M, the Hawks only won four matches. J. Dunsbergen pinned Mollie Greve in 34 seconds, and Breeden picked up a pin over Tim Carroll in 1:07. Johnson won by fall over Will Dunsbergen in 4:36. Barnett in the heavyweight division earned a 7-6 decision win over Ben Mead.

In the dual against HLV, the Hawks won five matches by forfeit to De Hoedt, J. Dunsbergen, Breeden, Van De Krol, and Barnett. Johnson was the only Hawk to win a contested weight size, pinning Dakota Huber in 1:11 at 152 pounds.

Facing a tough Sigourney team, L-S dropped the dual 66-11 after winning just two matches. J. Dunsbergen, who went 3-0 on the day, beat Thomas Stout by a 19-3 technical fall in 4:00. Johnson, who also went 3-0 at C-M with three pins, beat Cian Borra by fall in 1:29.

The Hawks have a home triangular with BGM and Iowa Valley this Thursday, Jan. 12.
