Home meet, Monte invitational open L-S season

The Hawk wrestlers traveled to Montezuma for the 2016 Montezuma Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3, for the second event of the season. While there, they faced wrestlers from BGM, East Marshall, Lone Tree, Marshalltown, North Mahaska, Montezuma, Pella, Pleasantville, Tri-County, and Waukee’s junior varsity. The Hawks ended up sending two wrestlers to the finals, as well one to the third-place match.

At 126 pounds, junior Josh Dunsbergen was one of the two to make his way to the finals match. In round one, he beat Montezuma’s Ben Jorgensen by pinning him in 58 seconds. In the semifinals, Dunsbergen beat North Mahaska’s Tyler Strasser by a 5-2 decision. Dunsbergen faced East Marshall’s Nick Meling, but got pinned in 3:12 to take second place.

Lynnville-Sully’s 132 pound wrestler, Ty Breeden, won his first match by pinning Hunter Faircloth of East Marshall in 49 seconds, but then lost his next two matches to end his day.

At 138 pounds, senior Caden Dunsbergen also won his first match. He pinned Tyler Meyer of Montezuma in 1:56. He then fell to Pella’s Sam Fredrickson in the semifinals and Waukee’s Jack Smith in the consolation match.

At 152 pounds, junior Cayden Johnson ended up third on the day. He won his first match of the day against North Mahaska’s Griffen Molenburg by pinning him in 2:42. In his semifinal match, he fell to Marshalltown’s Reese Hageman. He then won his consolation match by beating Montezuma’s Kale Latcham, pinning him in 1:42. He won his third-place match by beating Molenburg again, 17-11.

Lynnville-Sully’s other finalist was junior Sage Zylstra. He pinned his first man from East Marshall in 23 seconds. His semifinal match was against North Mahaska’s Dylan Comstock. Zylstra pinned him in 1:48. Zylstra then fell to Pleasantville’s Griffen McBribe by a 10-2 decision.

Senior Bryson Barnett wrestled at the 170-pound weight bracket on Saturday and received a bye in the first consolation round. He then lost his next two matches to East Marshall’s Noah Bandstra and North Mahaska’s Luke Groves.

Junior Aaron Van De Krol was the Hawk’s heaviest wrestler on Saturday at 220 pounds. Van De Krol lost his first-round match to Montezuma’s Tyler Foubert. He then won his next match by pinning East Marshall’s Logan Noe in one minute, but lost his third match to Zack Van Donselaar.

The Hawks had their first taste of competition this season two days prior to the Montezuma Invitational. Hosting Belle Plaine, Montezuma, North Mahaska, and Pekin on Thursday, Dec. 1, L-S had a strong night on the mat, ending with a 3-1 team record.

Against Montezuma, L-S won 39-24. J. Dunsbergen, Caden D., Johnson, and Zylstra all had wins by pin. Junior Carson Dunsbergen at 145 pounds had the only win by decision after beating Cole Widmer, 7-2. Breeden and Barnett both picked up wins by forfeit.

Belle Plaine did not bring many wrestlers to the meet, so L-S beat them 48-9 with five match wins by forfeit. Breeden pinned Nathan Clemann in 1:51, and Caden D. beat Christian Duncan by a fall in 1:26. Sophomore Eyon Moore at 195 pounds beat Ethan Allie by disqualification.

In the dual with Pekin, L-S pulled off a close 33-30 victory. J. Dunsbergen got the Hawks on the board with a pin over Elijah Sieren in 4:20. The only other L-S pin in the dual was Johnson’s win by fall in 4:13 over Hunter Conger. Zylstra beat Kaden Baker by a 5-3 decision, and the Hawks scored an additional 18 points from forfeits.

The final dual of the day for L-S came against North Mahaska. The Warhawks had a strong performance and topped L-S 48-12. The L-S points came from Zylstra pinning Dylan Comstock in 1:17 and Barnett pinning Chance Parrish in 4:46.

The grapplers will head to Saydel for a tournament this Saturday, Dec. 10. Go Hawks!
