A sharp start to district play is hopefully a sign of good things to come for the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team. The Hawks easily shut down North Mahaska, 65-33, in their first post-season game on Thursday, Feb. 15, at home. This was the third time the Warhawks and Hawks had met this season, with L-S coming out on top each time.

Coach Nick Harthoorn was pleased with the all-around effort he saw from his players.

“The guys came out and played sharp,” he said. “Our defensive intensity and our effort on the boards was solid. We continue to run the floor hard and share the basketball offensively.”

Junior Rylan James stretches up in the tipoff against North Mahaska last Thursday, Feb. 15, at home.

Senior Brevin Hansen was a thorn in the Warhawks’ side, scoring 26 points. He also had four assists, four steals, and one rebound.

The Hawks’ next top scorer was senior Jesse Van Wyk with 11 points, followed by fellow senior Tanner Foster with nine, and junior Rylan James with six. Nine Hawks total scored in the game.

L-S grabbed 31 boards, including six each from Van Wyk and James. Foster added five.

With the win, L-S is now 19-3 this season. The Hawks advanced to the district semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 21, playing Sigourney (10-12) at Montezuma. The winner of the game will play at Newton on Thursday, Feb. 22, against the winner of the Feb. 21 Montezuma versus Keota game. That game will determine the District 10 champion.

The District 10 and District 9 champs will play in a substate game at Oskaloosa on Saturday, Feb. 24, to determine who will go to state.

Good luck, boys!
