L-S VB team tops Tri-County in three games

The Lynnville-Sully volleyball team made quick work of Tri-County on Monday, Oct. 2, winning in three games: 25-18, 25-9, and 25-11. The Trojans have yet to win a match this season.

“We started out a little slow, but the girls really got going in the second and third games,” said L-S Coach Jayme Deal. “They really pushed when it came to serving tonight, in which we had very few errors. It was a great night to give everyone a chance to get in the game.”

The Hawks finished the night with 94 percent serve success (76 of 81). Junior Carson Fisk made all 14 serves. Senior McKinley Conover went 14-of-15, and freshman Krystal Van Dyke made 14-of-16.

Senior McKinley Conover bumps up the ball while freshman Krystal Van Dyke looks on.

Sophomore Mallory Loftus and Conover made the biggest difference at the net with seven and six kills respectively. Other Hawks with kills were junior Shiloh Cunningham with five, freshman Korinne Jansen with four, Van Dyke with three, and senior Skyler Young with one. Sophomore Janelle Rozendaal had five assists.

Fisk led the team in digs with 18, followed by Conover and Young with 12 apiece and Loftus with 10.

Cunningham and Van Dyke each had one block.

The 9-9 Hawks will host English Valleys on Thursday, Oct. 5. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness during the “Pack the Stands with PINK” night.

Anyone wearing pink – Hawk fans, English Valleys fans, and community supporters – will receive free admission to the game, compliments of the L-S Athletic Boosters. JV games start at 5:30 p.m. with varsity to follow. Senior volleyball players will also be honored that night. Freewill donations will be accepted with all funds going to support the Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Next week, the L-S girls will be at Keota on Monday. Then, they will have a couple important nights of competition to determine where they place in the SICL Conference. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, conference teams will play with their half of the conference (east teams play east teams, west teams play west teams). L-S will be at Belle Plaine, playing Tri-County in the first match. The winner will play Belle Plaine in the second match.

Thursday, Oct. 12, will be the crossover quad tournaments to determine final placements in the conference. The Hawks do not yet know who or where they will be playing that night.
