Lynnville-Sully’s boys basketball season has been a memorable one, and the team is chasing their dream of making it to the state tournament as they are in the midst of district action. The Hawks, ranked sixth in Class 1A, earned their third consecutive South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) Conference Championship when they soundly defeated Belle Plaine, 82-62, on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Over the past three years, the Hawks have worked hard to earn an impressive 50-2 SICL Conference record.

The win at Belle Plaine was also a memorable one for senior Jesse Van Wyk. Van Wyk, a four-year varsity letterwinner, collected his 1,000th high school career point on the Plainsmen’s court on Feb. 6. Van Wyk is the son of Jeff and Heidi Van Wyk of rural Sully.

Jesse Van Wyk goes up for two of his 15 points against the Baxter Bolts on Friday, Feb. 9. The senior scored his 1,000th high school career point earlier in the week.

The Hawks had a first-round bye in district action and will play the second of two games on Thursday, Feb. 15, at home against North Mahaska starting at 8 p.m.
