Tough opponents at Tri-County leave L-S at 1-2

The Hawks had a tough night at Tri-County on Tuesday, Dec. 13, going 1-2 after facing one ranked opponent.

In their first dual, the Hawks wrestled Tri-County and won 48-9. Most of the Hawks had byes against Tri-County because they only had two wrestlers. Then L-S lost to eighth-ranked Southeast Warren, 57-10. In the next dual, the Hawks faced Sigourney and fell 48-27.

Sage Zylstra, a 160-pound junior, was the only Hawk to go 3-0 at Tri-County. Zylstra had two byes and beat Sigourney’s Greg Gott in 0:38.

Sophomore Ty Breeden wrestled at 126 pounds and went 2-1. He pinned Sigourney’s Luke House in 1:59, won by forfeit against Tri-County, and lost to SEW’s Brady Kyner, who is ranked second in the state, by pin in 3:00.

At 132 pounds, junior Josh Dunsbergen also went 2-1 with his only loss to SEW’s Blake Bauer, 10-4. Dunsbergen beat Sigourney’s Nick Ives, 3-2, and had a win by forfeit against Tri-County.

Junior Carson Dunsbergen wrestled at 145 pounds, finishing with a 2-1 record. He beat Sigourney’s Jesse Fritz by pin in 1:36 and lost to SEW’s Colby Page, getting pinned in 3:09. His other win was by forfeit in the Tri-County dual.

Up a weight class at 152 pounds, junior Cayden Johnson also went 2-1. He lost to SEW’s Alex Henderson, 6-2. Johnson pinned Sigourney’s Cian Borra in 0:40 and had a win by forfeit against Tri-County.

Senior Caden Dunsbergen wrestled at 138. He went 1-2, losing to SEW’s Drake Sharp, 4-3, and Sigourney’s Zech Boender by pin in the second period. His win came by a Tri-County forfeit.

Fellow senior Bryson Barnett represented the Hawks at 170. Barnett went 1-2, losing to Sigourney’s Alec Schuster by pin in 0:36 and SEW’s TJ Dierking by pin in 3:06. His win was from a Tri-County forfeit.

Sophomore Caleb Barnett filled in at 285 pounds and went 1-2 on the night. Barnett beat SEW’s Conner Bregger, 9-0, to score four out of L-S’s 10 points against SEW.

Freshman Jacob De Hoedt, who wrestles at 106, went 1-0 with a forfeit win against Tri-County. De Hoedt didn’t finish out the evening due to a neck injury he has been battling.

Junior Aaron Van De Krol wrestled at 220. Van De Krol went 0-3 on the night.

Senior leader Caden Dunsbergen noted Tuesday was a “tough night for most of the Hawks.”

“We didn’t win some matches that we should have,” he said. “We need to keep improving so we can qualify for districts.”
