T. Van Maanen wins at home, girls get ready for districts

On Thursday, Apr. 27, the Hawk golf team played a dual golf meet at Diamond Trail Golf Course with Keota. Keota wasn’t able to field a full team, yet the Hawks put out their best effort after regional assignments had been announced earlier that day.

“Tessa Van Maanen was our first individual winner of the year, which was very exciting. We’re getting better at the things we’ve struggled with, but we need to keep getting better,” said L-S Coach Justin Hagedorn.

On a cold and windy afternoon, the Hawks pulled in a team score of 236 at their fifth home meet of the season.

Sophomore Tessa Van Maanen led the way for the Hawks with a score of 56, which was good enough for first place. She and a girl from Keota both scored 56, but she was announced the winner after a card back found that she had the lower score on the toughest hole.

“It wasn’t one of the better nights, but it was nice to play at home again. I thought our team did pretty well overall,” she said.

Seniors Kaylee Van Maanen, Kristine Jaennette, and Mikayla Smith each scored 60 in the last home meet of their careers. Sophomore Kayla Van Dyke’s round of 67 didn’t count toward the team score because she finished outside the top four of the team.

“We all stayed focused even though we knew they didn’t have a full team,” said Van Dyke.

On Thursday, Apr. 27, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced the Hawks will compete in Region 3A at Sigourney on Monday, May 15. Only three of the seven other schools will be able to field complete teams.

The L-S girls’ next event is the conference meet at Oakland Acres Golf Club on Monday, May 8, at 10 a.m.
