Two experienced seniors lead six-member wrestling team

The L-S wrestling team is small this year with only six grapplers, but they are hungry for victory. Practices started on Nov. 13 for the Hawks, who are coming off of a fourth-place finish at conference and a second-place finish at sectionals in the 2016-17 season. The Hawks lost three seniors, including last year's conference champion in the 145-pound weight bracket, Caden Dunsbergen.

Second-year coach Jason Walston comments on the boys’ determination.

“I believe our wrestlers will have a lot of success as they are focused and ready to work to achieve their goals,” he said.

Despite the small team, L-S welcomes back two seniors, Josh Dunsbergen and Cayden Johnson, who were the top two point-earners for the team in the previous season. Dunsbergen wrestled at 126 last year but is competing in the 132-pound weight bracket this season. Johnson is staying at 145-152.

There is just one other returning wrestler, junior Ty Breeden. The L-S wrestling program welcomes junior Ben Van Wyk and freshmen CJ Snethen, Kodie Waggoner, and Lane Mathis.

“I believe the wrestlers we have will have a lot of wins and have the potential to win a lot of tournaments.” said Walston, “Our weakness is with our numbers; it will be hard to win dual meets.”

Tom Pool is assisting the team for the sixth year.

The Hawks’ first meet takes place at Belle Plaine next Thursday, Nov. 30. Their first weekend tournament is Saturday, Dec. 2, at Montezuma. This meet is followed by 11 more before L-S competes in the SICL Conference meet on Jan. 27, 2018. The L-S Hawks will host their home invitational on Saturday, Dec. 16. The Hawks will also host a six-team duals tournament on Thursday, Jan. 18.
